Victoria Blocksdorf, Founder of Blockblocks Cleanup gGmbH
Sometimes things happen that completely change your view of the world. That's what happened to Victoria Blocksdorf when she traveled to Hawaii in 2018. There she experienced the beauty of nature and the sea in all its facets, encountered singing whales in a kayak, and observed dolphins and sea turtles in their natural habitat: the ocean.
One day, however, she found a huge tangle of ropes, fishing nets, and plastic waste on the beach, which she had to leave behind because it was far too large to simply clear away. Victoria was aware of the deadly danger it posed to the animals in the open sea and felt sad and helpless. She suddenly saw the beaches of Hawaii with different eyes: littered with plastic waste such as bottles, packaging, flip-flops, or toothbrushes; the sand interspersed with tiny, colorful plastic fragments.
Back in Düsseldorf, Victoria quickly realized: this problem exists not only in Hawaii, it is everywhere. She decided to actively take action against plastic pollution in the oceans – and she didn't even have to return to Hawaii or the sea to do so. Tons of plastic end up in the oceans via the Rhine every year. So she started cleaning up – right in her hometown of Düsseldorf, which lies on the Rhine. She quickly realized that there was a lot to do. Far too much to be managed by one person alone.
So Victoria founded Blockblocks Cleanup and has since organized monthly trash collections in Düsseldorf, where anyone can free the Rhine's banks from litter so that it doesn't end up in the oceans. So far, more than eleven tons of trash have been collected during over 50 cleanups along the Rhine and its tributaries. But Victoria is not only active along the Rhine; she also raises awareness about plastic waste through presentations and visits schools and companies.
EPOS supports this great initiative both financially and with extensive marketing and communication services.
One of the successes: a storytelling campaign around a found message in a bottle with coverage on all major channels including Express, RTL, Rheinische Post, WDR and many more. The reach achieved within one month was more than four million viewers and readers. With this, we were able to significantly increase the awareness of Blockblocks Cleanup among the population of Düsseldorf in just a few weeks and draw attention to the vision of clean rivers and seas. Because: 80 percent of the waste that is washed into the sea every year in tons comes from the land. The regular waste collection campaigns by Blockblocks Cleanup counteract this destructive development.
