Victoria Blocksdorf, Founder of Blockblocks Cleanup gGmbH
Sometimes things happen that completely change the way you look at the world. That's what happened to Victoria Blocksdorf when she traveled to Hawaii in 2018. There she experienced the beauty of nature and the sea in all its facets, encountered singing whales in a kayak and observed dolphins and turtles in their natural habitat: the ocean.
One day, however, she found a huge tangle of ropes, fishing nets and plastic garbage on the beach, which she had to leave behind because it was far too big to simply clear away. Victoria was aware of the deadly danger it posed to animals in the open ocean, and felt sad and helpless. She suddenly saw the beaches of Hawaii with different eyes: littered with plastic waste such as bottles, packaging, flip-flops or toothbrushes; the sand interspersed with tiny, colorful plastic splinters.
Back in Düsseldorf, Victoria quickly realized: this problem doesn't just exist in Hawaii, it's everywhere. She decided to take active action against plastic pollution in the oceans - and she didn't even have to return to Hawaii or the sea to do it. Tons of plastic end up in the oceans every year via the Rhine River. So she started cleaning up - right in her hometown of Düsseldorf, which is located on the Rhine. She quickly realized there was a lot to do. Far too much for one person to handle alone.
So Victoria founded Blockblocks Cleanup and since then has been organizing garbage collections in Düsseldorf every month, where anyone can free the banks of the Rhine from garbage so that it doesn't end up in the oceans. So far, more than 50 cleanups along the Rhine and its tributaries have collected over eleven tons of trash. But Victoria is not only active on the Rhine, she also raises awareness of the issue of plastic waste in lectures and visits schools and companies.
EPOS supports this great initiative both financially and with extensive marketing and communication services.
One of the successes: a storytelling campaign around a found message in a bottle with coverage on all major channels including Express, RTL, Rheinische Post, WDR and many more. The achieved reach within one month was more than four million viewers and readers. We were thus able to decisively increase awareness of Blockblocks Cleanup among the Düsseldorf population in just a few weeks and draw attention to the vision of clean rivers and oceans. Because: 80 percent of the garbage that is washed into the sea by the ton every year comes from the land. The regular trash collection campaigns of Blockblocks Cleanup counteract this destructive development.
